- Diesel Engine: The heart of a diesel pressure washer is its diesel engine. This engine is typically a four-stroke, internal combustion engine fuelled by diesel fuel. The engine generates power by burning diesel fuel in the presence of air, which creates mechanical energy that is then used to drive the pump.
- Pump: The diesel engine is connected to a high-pressure pump. The pump’s primary function is to pressurise the water supplied to it. It draws in water from a water source, such as a garden hose or a water tank, and then pressurises it to a very high level. The pump can generate pressure levels ranging from a few hundred to several thousand pounds per square inch (psi).
- Nozzle: Once the water is pressurised by the pump, it is delivered to a spray gun through a high-pressure hose. At the end of the spray gun, there is a nozzle that can be adjusted to control the spray pattern and force. The narrow the nozzle opening, the higher the pressure, and the more concentrated the spray. Conversely, a wider nozzle opening produces a lower pressure and a broader spray pattern.
- Trigger Operation: The user operates the pressure washer by pulling the trigger on the spray gun. This action releases the high-pressure water in the desired pattern and force, allowing for effective cleaning.
- Cleaning Process: The high-pressure water jet is used to clean various surfaces, such as paths, decks, vehicles, and industrial equipment. The force of the water helps to dislodge dirt, grime, grease, and other contaminants from the surface being cleaned.
- Heat and Detergent (Optional): Some diesel pressure washers are equipped with heating elements and detergent injection systems. These features can help enhance the cleaning process. The heating element can heat the water, making it more effective at removing certain types of dirt and stains. The detergent injection system allows for the addition of cleaning agents to further improve the cleaning process.
